FAQ
Q: I love sewing and/or fiber arts but I’ve never taught before is this job right for me?
A: Teaching is a people business. If you love sharing knowledge and have plenty of patience then this might just be your calling!
Q: I’m really amazing at (quilting, swimsuits, costumes, pattern drafting, etc.) and I’ve always wanted to teach. You don’t offer a class like this, would you?
A: Yes! We’re always looking to add new types of classes (and the instructors to teach them). We’d love to hear about your class idea and how we might work together!
Q: I just graduated from design school. What’s the annual salary?
A: We do not have any full-time positions available at this time. Our studio allows for more teaching diversity by having many different part-time positions rather than one or two full-time ones. This allows more flexibility for employees and students.
Q: I work another job during the day, can I teach in the evening?
A: Yes! Evening classes are a popular time to both learn and teach. We can also offer classes on Saturday/Sunday to suit your schedule.
Q: I don’t have a car, is there a bus line near you?
A: There is a bus line but it’s a bit of a walk. You’ll really want to be sure you have extremely reliable transportation before applying.
Q: I really don’t feel comfortable working with adults or kids. Will I have to teach them?
A: No. We only want you to teach the classes you’re most excited about! Students need to feel your excitement if they’re going to come back. That being said, the most versatile instructors will probably end up with more bookings.
Q: Do I need to provide my own lesson plans and class materials?
A: No, we’ll provide you with the lesson plans and class materials for each class you teach. However, you will be expected to help develop new and exciting studio projects to teach your students!
Q: How many hours per week can I expect to work as a part-time instructor?
A: The number of hours you’ll work each week can vary based on your availability and the number of students booked. We’re open by appointment only so you’ll only work shifts in which you have bookings. We typically have classes during the day, evening, and on weekends, so there are plenty of opportunities to teach. We only require 1 booking to run a class and most classes require 12 hours of advanced booking.
Q: How many students will I be teaching?
A: Adult class instructors usually teach a maximum of three students at any time. Kids after school and weekend classes can have up to 5 students per instructor. We work as a team during camp programs with up to 8 kids per instructor.
