Beyond the 9-Patch – Beginner Quilt Class in Boston Metro West

Ready to explore the colorful, creative world of quilting? Our Introduction to Quilting with Sue is a hands-on beginner quilting class held in our cozy, well-equipped studio in the Boston Metro West area. Whether you’re new to sewing or returning to quilting after a break, this workshop will guide you through the essential techniques needed to complete a small, quilted project from start to finish.

Students will learn how to select fabrics and choose from three classic quilt block patterns — Log Cabin, Hidden 4-Patch, or Hidden 9-Patch. You’ll gain confidence using rotary cutters, rulers, and mats to accurately cut your pieces, and then move on to piecing and assembling your chosen block on a sewing machine. From there, we’ll cover how to add a border, layer your quilt to make a “quilt sandwich,” and machine quilt the layers together. You’ll also learn how to make and attach binding, finishing the project with a touch of hand stitching for that polished look.

This beginner-friendly quilting class includes all necessary supplies, so you can simply show up and start stitching. We provide quality quilting cottons, batting, backing fabric, cutting tools (rotary cutters, rulers, and mats), sewing machines, and binding materials. You’ll leave with a completed quilt block or mini quilt, new skills, and the confidence to start your next quilting adventure.
